Real Live Happenings In The Life Of Goody Two Shoes
A few days ago I faced a dilemma , one I have been thinking about since.
Before I begin the story I need to fill you in on the background before the dilemma and circumstances surrounding it.
It was the last day of September and still quite hot in these parts. Eight ladies had been touring around local charities , had lunch and were about to go home when disaster struck .
My car had a puncture , no big deal really except I was parked on a steep hill outside a church where a funeral was about to be held for a 19 year old youth that was very active in the community and had died of cancer .
There was a large poster of the youth flapping in the wind above my car, people were arriving for the funeral upset and the road was about to be closed .
I actually live in Israel but this was happening in a suburb of Bethlehem. I am very conscious that I don't look or speak like the majority . I am one of those foreigners that never quite fits in anywhere .
I had to change the tyre , the huge nail that was stuck in the tyre was visible from the outside , it was laughing at me .....you know how they do .
Then just like Superman ( Clark Kent ) Bushra arrives . He explains he is the manager of a local bus depot that has it's garages on the same road and in charge of all their repairs , quick as a flash Mohamad his worker changes the tyre . Bushra points me in the direction of the tyre fixing place and says don't pay more than $ 3 .
All is well , tyre is fixed , ladies back in the car and we are on our way before the funeral starts.
Dilemma and Moral: Why on earth did I play into the chauvinist stereotypes of the area ? Yes of course I wanted the tyre changing as quickly as possible and no I couldn't do it myself and I am very, very grateful to Bushra and Mohamad, but what I say with my lips I did not practice that afternoon. I can justify it all away with funerals and politics but if I am to be honest it was convenient to play the helpless female role . My conclusion is Goody Two Shoes has double standards ......sometimes .
