GTS and the 50 Shades of Black and White

GTS and the 50 Shades of Black and White

I recently returned from a two week visit to my native country. When I was there, a new film was released based on some books I had not read. It was released in time for Valentines Day.

I was bombarded from all sides about this film and book(s). The radio hosted a phone-in quiz for free tickets to the film, every 10 minutes at the most. The newspapers had endless reports on it. Television had chat shows about it. The books were in my guest bedroom at a host's house. Even the local charity shop was selling the books!

I began to ask people if they had seen the film or read these books. I weighed the pluses and minuses of reading them myself so I would be 'in the know.'

At the same time, there were some big music awards happening not far from where I was staying. Again, endless talk of celebrities and their clothes and cleavages.

I narrowed my eyes and had to hold firm in order not to be sucked in. Many of my friends were doing the same .

On returning back to Jerusalem, I stayed indoors resisting outside contact till my head had caught up with my body (usually takes a day or so).

Then it was time to re-enter. A women's conference for Palestinians and Israelis.

My first encounter with a local person here was a friend frantically talking on the telephone to her husband making sure he was alright.

She explained that due to the constant spraying of SKUNK (wikipedia.org/wiki/SKUNK) on the front door of her house, the door had shrunk allowing stray bullets and tear gas into the house. She said the last three nights had been very difficult, with constant protests around her house. The third night, she slept away at the conference but phoned at breakfast time to make sure her husband was alright. He had not answered the phone and she was worried. The best was he had been asleep, the worst was unthinkable.

It was the best explanation. He had been asleep and missed her call. Relief all around.

Within 48 hours, I had swapped worlds and worries. How different they were! How challenging they were. Which was easier? One was media blasted, the other was media hidden. Which one matters most? Or do either?

Black and White, they shouted at me. Resist and Help! Do something! Do anything but do not be passive.

Advice: Be on the look out at all times.
